2007-04-22 - 4:01 p.m. Well, this blog is about to get a lot more frequently updated. Why is that you ask? Well, there are two reasons. One is that I'll now have a ton more free time, and the other is that I'll be using that free time to do things worth blogging about. Somehow it's hard to get excited about posting to the internet the HILARIOUS story about how I typed a leaflet this week. Anyway, the reason behind both of these reasons is that I'm now officially done at the restaurant. Yep- I quit. My last shift was Friday. This was precipitated on Easter weekend, when I woke up Easter Saturday and thought 'Man is it nice to not have to look forward to going to work today.' I got to thinking about it, and thinking about life, and the summer, and I realized that I would rather be able to take advantage of the beautiful summer in Victoria than work every Friday and Saturday. So, I walked down on Easter Monday, spur of the moment and quit. Then I found out that they had switched me back to being a dishwasher, and I figured I'd made the same choice. I really didn't want to end up in the same place I was last year before the trip, when all I did was work and eat badly. And now I'm done. It's a bit of an odd feeling. So yesterday Karissa came to visit me. Karissa is an old friend of mine, circa grade three, when she moved to Rocky. I don't really keep in close touch with that many people from high school, let alone the Christian school, let alone people from the Christian school that I went to grade three with, so it was nice to see her. She's working for a Reformed college in the States as an admissions counsellor. Her whole job is to sell the school to prospective students, and her territory includes BC and Alberta. She had a meeting with a student on the Island, and then drove down to see me. I met her at her B&B for breakfast, where I got easily the most fancy breakfast I've ever had. We started off with a broiled grapefruit (I've never had warm grapefruit before!) and then had a fresh croissant, straight from the oven, with saskatoon berry jam, then a crepe with asparagus and smoked salmon, pesto and grilled cheese. We finished with a bread pudding with white and dark chocolate. It was pretty good. I took Karissa over to the Cathedral, and we had a very interesting chat about Anglicanism. She's a protestant, and doesn't really know that much about Anglicanism, so I loved sharing my (mostly new found) knowledge. The Bell Ringers were there, having some kind of training seminar, and they let us go up the bell tower before they started and have a look around. It's pretty impressive- 77 steps up a spiral staircase in a tower, which you don't get much of in Canada. Then we went to the museum, since they are in the midst of a Titanic exhibit. It was really good- they have all these artifacts from the wreck site, and tons of good information. Very interesting. They give you a boarding card before you get on, with the name of a passenger, so you can sort of follow them through the exhibit. I was a first class business man. Interestingly, they had some documents on display that had actually belonged to the guy whose name was on my card. Then at the end of the exhibit, they have a list of who lived and who died, and you can find the name of your person. Both Karissa and I lived. We went for supper to Ferris', which really is the best place in Victoria. The food is so great, and it's affordable. We wound up staying up till about four talking and catching up, then catching a couple hours sleep, and making it to the eight o clock service at the church so Karissa could catch her ferry and church today. After church we went to the restaurant for breakfast, which was a bit awkward, but it's the best breakfast place in the area. It was sure nice to see her again, it must have been two years since I saw her. Every time I was in the Rock, she wasn't, and vice versa.
